Adam Yee

Bachelor of Science in Biology

“My professors and teachers have almost always aided me in being successful. Whether that be through well prepared lecturing, or aiding with after school questions, the WVU staff seems to have a burning passion for academic nourishment.”

Hometown: I am from a small town in southern West Virginia called Fairdale, it's about 30 minutes outside of Beckley

Hobbies: I enjoy going to the gym, playing guitar, hanging out with my friends, petting my four cats, and learning about the functioning and molecular workings of the human body

Scholarships and/or academic awards: I have received the WVU Climb higher scholarship, the Trap Hill Alumni scholarship, and various other aids through  the Beckley Area Foundation.

Extracurriculars: I always love getting on the courts to play ball; whether it be pickleball, tennis, basketball, and sometimes even badminton

Interesting Fact: I come from a Chinese family and as such, I enjoy a lot of cultural norms a lot of other people don’t, but should.

Favorites: I love the Boston/Cambridge area of Massachusetts, great people, great diversity, great food.

Making Friends: WVU has been a hotspot for me in terms of making friends. There are so many people here with so many different cultures, ideas, and heritages that there's always somebody out there you can talk to and share interests with.

Interests outside of major: Outside of my Biology major, I love the subject of philosophy, specifically in the medical field. Chewing on tough topics like bioethics, the roles of medicine and doctors in society, and the nature of health and disease really ignites my brain

Q&A with Adam

  • What is your favorite place on campus?
    • My absolute favorite place on the WVU campus is the Student recreation center. There is an abundance of activities to engage in while there; from swimming, to rock climbing, to weight lifting, and more. Seeing fellow students and peers engaging in healthy living also motivates me to do the same.
  • What is your most memorable moment?
    • My most memorable moments are always in class when the professors try to relate to the students by telling funny anecdotes.
  • What is your favorite class and why?
    • My favorite class is my Healthcare Ethics class with Daniel Miller. We always delve into deep subjects that touch upon different topics that all pique my interest.
  • What experience or class has taught you the most so far?
    • The class that has taught me the most has been Honors 402, Foundations of Peer Mentoring. Not only does this class help you develop as a leader for fellow students, but it is also a phenomenal class for self growth and discovery. The book topics covered in class give guidance on how to transition from being a child in highschool to becoming a full fledged young adult in college.
  • Why did you choose WVU?
    •  I chose WVU because the mountains have always been my home, and the welcoming atmosphere WVU provides instills in me a sense of pride for my home state.
  • What advice would you give your freshman self?
    • I would tell my freshman self to take it easy. Don't panic over academics and become manic with stress. Focus on yourself and stay breezy.
  • Share something you have learned during your time at WVU:
    • I have learned that everyone has a life of their own jam packed full of experiences, obligations, and beliefs. I have learned that staying in one's own bubble of comfortability will never lead to growth as a person, and that you’ll regret something whether you do it or not. So just do it.
  • What are your favorite things about being in this major?
    • I love being in the Biology major because the inner workings of life itself have always fascinated me. Biology offers answers to the burning questions of life such as,  “what does it mean to be alive?” “Why do we grow and procreate?.” Biology as its name suggests is the study of life itself.
  • What is the most interesting thing about your major?
    • Hands down the most interesting thing about being biology major has to be the different plethora of people who are also as excited about biology as I am.
  • Why did you want to pursue this major?
    • I wanted to pursue this major not only because I want to become a doctor, but because deeper knowledge into the inner mechanisms of life is important not only to me as an individual, but to almost every living organism on the planet. Whatever sort of dysfunction an organism may have, I want to be able to diagnose it, and fix it.
  • How have your professors and/or staff helped you be successful?
    • My professors and teachers have almost always aided me in being successful. Whether that be through well prepared lecturing, or aiding with after school questions, the WVU staff seems to have a burning passion for academic nourishment.
  • What skills and/or knowledge have you gained that you feel will help you be successful in your future career?
    • The absolute biggest skill that I have gained is my ability to communicate professionally with peers and leaders alike. I feel as though I am flourishing in terms of communication.
  • What are your career goals?
    • My career goals include, getting my college degree, going to med school, becoming a doctor (specializing probably) and eventually having my own practice.
  • Ask about the most interesting/mind blowing thing they have learned so far that is related to their major.
    • The most mind blowing thing I have learned is that Aneuploidy disorders  (especially when talking about trisomies in humans) is almost always fatal
