WVU Campus Food Garden

Empowering the WVU Community and all West Virginians to end food insecurity through garden-based education, advocacy for food justice, and community engagement.

The WVU Campus Food Garden was established in 2021 with a three-part mission: to grow fresh produce for donation to food pantries, to teach gardening skills, and to advocate for access to nutritious food.

Our garden spaces on the Evansdale Campus include a 225 sq. ft. in-ground garden and approximately 200 sq. ft. of raised beds. From this relatively small area, we harvested nearly 900 pounds of fresh produce by the end of the 2024 growing season!

We grow spring crops like peas and chard, summer favorites such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini, and fall staples like peppers and butternut squash. All harvested produce is donated to The Rack, WVU’s student food pantry, or to other local food pantries.

Since its beginning, the Garden has thrived thanks to the dedication of WVU students, faculty, staff, and volunteers from the Morgantown area. Together, they build raised beds, enrich soil with compost, sow seeds, transplant seedlings, manage pests, weed, water, and harvest crops. While some volunteers come with gardening experience, many are first-time growers learning as they go.
