Role: PhD Candidate,
Sam is a plant systematist studying the evolution of Zinniinae, a subtribe of the sunflower tribe in the daisy family. The Zinniinae are New World endemics that can be found growing in both temperate and desert environments. He uses molecular tools and morphological data to build phylogenetic trees which can be used as a framework to study adaptations to arid environments. His research interests include taxonomy, biogeography, speciation, polyploidy, and synantherology.
