Financial Aid

For information on costs, scholarships, and financial aid please visit the Future Students site.

WVU students receive over $317 million in grants, loans, work study, fee waivers, and scholarships. Awards are based on financial need and academic ability. About 70 percent of WVU students receive some financial aid; almost half of the aid given to resident undergraduates is as grants and scholarships.

To apply for financial aid, you need to submit your admissions application to WVU and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the federal processing
center before the March 1 absolute deadline.

The FAFSA form is available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ after January 1.

Our school code is 003827.

Department Scholarships

In addition to the financial aid offered by West Virginia University, the Department maintains three scholarship programs specifically for biology majors. These are awarded each spring.

Ethel C. Montiegel Scholarship

The Ethel C. Montiegel Scholarship is awarded to students, usually in their junior year, who have shown a particular aptitude for biology and have demonstrated a clear desire for a career in the biological sciences.

Earl C. Core Memorial Scholarship

The Earl C. Core Memorial Scholarship provides support to biology students studying the ecology of West Virginia or the Appalachian region.

Henry W. Hurlbutt Memorial Scholarship

The Henry W. Hurlbutt Memorial Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students who are conducting independently mentored research through the Departmentʼs Undergraduate Research Program as part of their Honorsʼ requirements. This scholarship provides resources for students to attend professional meetings, travel to perform research, or to support the cost of their research activity within WVU.
